Schmooze&Booze

future events

Schmooze & Booze is a regular networking event for young journalists and other media workers, started by , a 23-year-old sub-editor who wondered how it was that all middle-aged journalists knew each other. So she created Schmooze & Booze: the first was held in August 2006 at the Commercial Tavern in the East End, the second in the Angelic pub in Islington in October, and the third at the Southwark Rooms in November.

The events now attract more than 200 people, from all kinds of media and media-related jobs. We hope they provide a relaxed setting in which to make interesting and useful contacts, without the awkward silences and enforced jolliness of more formal networking.

Email with your name and job title to get on the mailing list to hear about future Schmoozes.

Most of our events are open to all, although they are targeted at youngish media types, who are starting out in the industry - and, of course, anyone in a position to employ them. Every few months, we will be following the precedent set by our April 2007 event, News and Booze, and hosting an evening just for journalists.

Our next event will be our Second Birthday Party!

On August 11, Schmooze and Twos (it was inevitable, wasn't it?) will be held at Occo restaurant, 58 Crawford Street in Marylebone from 6.30pm until midnight. The restaurant is giving us 2-for-1 cocktails between 6.30pm and 8pm to help us celebrate. To get a place on the guest list (limited to 250), email schmoozeandbooze@googlemail.com.

One final note: We've had a problem recently with people RSVPing and then not turning up. This makes Helen sad because she has to turn away scores of would-be attendees when the list fills up. So if you say you're going to come and discover you can't make it, please give her 24 hours' notice so your place can go to someone else. Serial offenders will be given lower priority for attendance at future events - or even removed from the mailing list if Helen gets really cross.

P.S. Do check out our sponsors at Press Gazette plus the excellent Champagne Socialist, Stirred Up and Pen Pusher magazines.

P.P.S. We don't normally do plugs, but this one is for the company my boyfriend works for, so I hope you'll understand. Square Mile is looking for a design intern to help with its modern, glossy quarterly lifestyle magazine for City workers. The successful applicant should have basic InDesign and PhotoShop skills but does not need extensive magazine experience. They should also be willing to travel to Clapham for work Monday to Friday. The position is unpaid, but the company is looking to recruit a junior designer and will strongly consider any interns who come up to scratch. Send a covering letter, including details of when you could work, and a CV to Art Editor Matt Hasteley on matth@squaremilemagazine.co.uk.
